Taekwondo's Recent History- The Modern Movement, and Olympic Status

 

Having highlighted several personalities who embodied the Korean Patriot spirit, it is now appropriate to discuss personalities who exemplify these ideals by promoting Korean culture globally through Taekwondo. At the promoting of South Korean government, the Korean Taekwondo Association was formed in 1963, uniting the nine different style of schools.

 

Construction of the Kukkiwon, the World Headquarters of Taekwondo, began on November 9, 1971 and the building was inaugurated on November 30. 1972. The completion of Kukkiwon was possibly by the sole and devoted effort of
Dr. Kim was elected a member of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) and served as a vice president of the IOC until he resigned. Under his leadership, Taekwondo became an Olympic demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and became a medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
