69 My Wife, the better Half and my family 2

I have always thought of my wife as the most beautiful wife and the best mother in the world from the first time that I set my eyes on her. She has sacrificed her entire life for her husband and children, and has kept the family together without losing her dignity.

When the status of the husband rises to a certain level, most Korean wives are satisfied and do not try to develop themselves. However my wife is different. At first, as a wife of a Army officer and government Official, and now as the wife of a global sports leader, she has always been the perfect wife. She had talent of becoming a pianist, but she gave it up to support me throughout my life, and I have always been thankful. Also, my wife studied foreign languages to share conversations with IOC families and the friends of her husband from all over the world.

Within the IOC, I often hear other people say, “Your wife is indeed a graceful lady.” My wife has been my trustworthy supporter, outstanding promotion agent, and a brilliant partner who understands how I feel.

In my business trips to international conferences and meetings, there are times when the trip lasts for a very long time, and in many of these cases, the wife and husband accompanies each other. However, instead of spending a time of their own, much time from the moment of boarding the plane, is spent busily for the preparation of meetings and other agenda. That is why my wife spends much time by herself.

Sometimes, at presidential receptions and other events, couples attend, but most of the times, my wife and I both have a separate agenda, and only see each other late in the night. Usually the next morning, I would be busy again with my affairs. This is how it normally is during business trips. Fortunately at IOC gatherings, there are programs prepared for the wives, and my wife participates in cultural events and seminars. Here, she shares many thoughts with other women from all over the world. Also, when my youngest child Hyejung has a piano recital, she always runs to be by her side.

I have met with my children who are staying overseas, but my wife usually goes to see them by herself. I have always regretted that I was too busy to spend time with my family.

For about a year in 1961, I lectured English classes at a Women’s University. After seeing female university students for a while, I was able to understand a little about the female mind. Women’s social status could not be guaranteed in Korea, and their status usually depended on the husband. However, it is wrong to think that the husband’s status defines the wife’s status, because strictly speaking, it is the husband who has accomplished it. The status can only keep balance if the wife develops with the rising status of her husband. Aren’t Korean women limiting their lives to their husbands and children?

However, the women in Korea should also take charge of their lives. They must never stop self-development. Claiming fame, or showing their capability is not everything to social participation. Women, as a wife, and also as a mother, must actively explore their own lives. That is why I am always so proud of my wife. Women’s status are rapidly rising in all sectors in Korea now.
