78  People that Gave me Strength 4

- Former Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil

I welcomed former Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil, with his wife Park Yong-ok, at Harvard University in 1964. He was staying away from the troubled times in Korea, traveling in Europe and the U.S. He was spending time visiting universities, meeting people in culture, economics and touring companies around the world. He participated in an international seminar hosted by Henry Kissinger at Harvard University.

He was very knowledgeable in politics, economy, culture, arts and sports. Also, he had a mysterious way of attracting people. I could not have guessed that he was a former military who masterminded 1961 Military Corp if I hadn’t known. I still remember his answer to the question of Professor Reichauer visiting his home near in Boston.

“How do you define Politics?”
Professor Reichauer asked. After thinking over a while, he answered. “I think that politics is to be patient when one the could not be patient." I believe he wanted to express the troubled political times of Korea as 'patience'.
Kim Jong-pil met Henry Kissinger at that time. After a while,  Kessinger became a White House security advisor and Secretary of State under President Nixon, and Kim Jong-pil became Prime Minister under President Park Chung-Hee. This relationship would have been a great help in promoting ROK-US relations.

I also had the chance to meet Park Se-jik, the president of the Olympic Organizing committee. An ex-military, Park succeeded President Rho Tae-woo, was a little stiff at the shoulders, but he was very humane, academic, and positive. He was the type that listened very well to those who were diligent and hardworking. He was never mediocre, a man of great efforts.

- President Park Se-jik

 Seoul Olympic Games Organizing Committee
I met Park Se-jik Seoul Olympic Games Organizing Committee(SLOOC) President through Olympics. Apart from the fact that he was a soldier, he had a big human scale, a lot of studying, progressive, active, and pure person. English was good, too. Humanely sincere and industrious, he was the type that listened very well to people. He was not very timid and made a great effort. Park had been  a Vice President of SLOOC like me. Soon after SLOOC President Roh Tae-woo moved to National Assembly, Park became the President.

As Park was to make a speech at the IOC meeting, he prepared for over two weeks. He stayed up nights after nights to rewrite drafts and memorized the speech. He says that he likes to make speeches without a script, so he always memorized his speech. Sometimes he would forget his lines, bringing laughter to the room.

As a person that believed that although life doesn’t always work out, time waits for no man, he was a man that was effective in managing his time. He made a great contribution to the success of the Seoul Olympic Games.
He and I made the Korea Sports Promotion Corporation with the profit of 300 billion won, and now it supports Several billion budget a year for the sports promotion.
